Combat Builds Tier List

Overworld does not glue you to a class forever. Equip different weapons, arrows, or spellbooks and your identity changes. This combat builds tier list ranks the three core styles for Early Access.

S-tier — Ranged

Ranged currently posts the highest practical DPS for solo grinding when you manage arrows. The Goblin Camp roof method lets you shoot safely before graduating into caves—full route on Level Archery Fast.

Strengths: Distance, boss chip damage, flexible repositioning
Costs: Constant arrow crafting or purchases
Pair with: Light armor upgrades from Early Gear

A-tier — Melee

Melee hits hard and feels great in parties that hold aggro. You will burn health potions and must learn boss telegraphs in Dungeons and Bosses.

Strengths: Simple kit, strong burst beside allies
Costs: Healing upkeep, higher risk in PvP gear-risk fights (Party and PvP)
Pair with: Sturdy crafted sets from Mining and Smithing

B-tier early / A-tier later — Mage

Magic starts softer and demands mana potions plus spellbook management. Buy books from shops, drag them onto the hotbar, and use F / hold R as explained in Controls and Settings. Scaling improves once your economy supports sustained casting.

Strengths: Utility spells, strong late growth
Costs: Early mana friction, shop dependence
Pair with: Gold loops on Make Money Fast

Hybrid advice

Many accounts level Mining and Cooking-style support skills while fighting as Ranged, then dabble in Mage for specific quests. Use Skills Priority so combat XP does not starve gathering unlocks.

Practice plan (one evening)

  1. Finish starter quests from Getting Started.
  2. Craft or buy a basic bow and a stack of arrows.
  3. Roof-camp goblins to ~20 ranged comfort.
  4. Enter caves with a party for Goblin King loot.
  5. Reassess whether Melee or Mage deserves a trial session.

Sibling tier pages

Compare Skills Priority and Early Gear. Return to the Tier List Hub when patches shift potion prices or weapon kits.

Play the style you will actually practice—consistency beats a theoretical S-tier you abandon after ten minutes.

Potion math matters

A build that wins on dummy DPS but drains your gold still loses the week. Track consumable spend with Gold Farming Planner. Ranged’s arrow tax is predictable; Melee’s healing tax spikes on mistakes; Mage’s mana tax spikes on panic casting.

Training dummies in the wild

Use low-threat packs to learn animation cancel timing and camera height. Then take that muscle memory into caves. Players who only fight bosses learn too slowly—and die with expensive food still in the bag.

Respec psychology

Because gear swaps redefine your style, schedule intentional “alt style nights” rather than panic swapping mid-wipe. Keep a cheap Melee backup even as a ranger so empty quivers do not end the session.

Field notes from Early Access

Advanced players should track three metrics for each style: gold per hour consumed, XP per hour gained, and wipe rate in party content. Ranged often wins XP/hour; Melee can win wipe rate with good tanks; Mage can win utility once stocked. Re-rank monthly using those metrics rather than vibes. Share the spreadsheet with your party so loot priorities match the builds you actually run. If a patch changes arrow crafting, rerun the metrics before declaring the tier list “dead.” Evidence keeps arguments short and progress long.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for Overworld players.

Can I switch builds without rerolling?

Yes. Change weapons, armor focus, and spellbooks. Skills persist across styles.

Why is Mage lower early?

Mana upkeep and weaker early damage make it slower until your economy and skills catch up.

What should duos run?

Ranged chip plus Melee hold is a friendly default for Goblin King attempts.
